Bike Tow was established in 1998, after a rather nasty motorcycle accident on a Los Angeles freeway. My beautiful 1996 Honda Gold Wing had seen better days before the accident, but when the guy arrived to load it onto his tow truck, he did MORE damage to the bike with his tow truck than I had done by dropping it at 50 m.p.h. while towing a trailer.
While I rested on the pavement and allowed the paramedics to do what they needed to do with me, I watched as my damaged bike became a complete total during the loading process. The tow truck driver, who I suspect was actually a crazed evil escaped zoo gorilla in a man suit, loaded my bike by dropping his large metal hook through my front alloy wheel and latching onto one of the spokes. He then used his winch to DRAG my Wing over a guard rail and flop it onto his flatbed. "Dude! Your bikes' a TOTAL!" I shouted, "IT IS NOW!"
I watched in horror as the forks were pulled through the fairing, popping out the headlight, detaching the windshield, and generally rendering the bike unrecognizable. Laying there on the freeway, with the parade of lookie-loo's creeping past me, is when I swore that I would start a motorcycle towing service that KNOWS how to handle a motorcycle!
I wanted a suitable name. I also wanted the license plate on the truck to BE the business name. As fate would have it, the only available plate among my many choices was "BIKE TOW." The rest is history!
